It's shaping up to be the biggest book season in 20 years with more than 50 top name authors issuing new books. According to Copperfield's Book Buyer, Ty Wilson who has been in the book buying business since 1986, “I've never seen anything like it. This is the strongest fall in my memory.”
“You have people like John Irving and Barbara Kingsolver coming out with new fiction, and then there's the nonfiction authors like Jon Krakauer, Richard Dawkins, and Malcolm Gladwell. And this is just the beginning...” Wilson continued.
Wendy Pearl, sales representative for Penguin Books agrees, “I've gotten feedback from all of my accounts that our list is the best they've ever seen. “ Penguin has books coming from Sue Monk Kidd, as well as authors Nick Hornby, Sue Grafton, Garrison Keillor, Stewart Brand, and Greg Mortenson.
Said Charles Spaulding, representative for Random House, "This fall season represents the most compelling list of books by name authors in the last 10 years. We have authors like Jon Krakauer, Dan Brown, John Grisham, Lorrie Moore, Orhan Pamuk, Margaret Atwood, and A. S. Byatt....all with amazing new books." One of the reasons for the outpouring may well be the economy. Publishers have pushed the authors to deliver books. For instance, Pat Conroy, author of new release South of Broad, hasn't had a new book in 14 years. Audrey Niffenegger--who wrote the bestselling The Time Traveler's Wife six years ago--has Her Fearful Symmetry due out the end of September. Random House is coming out with John Irving's Last Night in Twisted River in October after four years without a book. E.L. Doctorow has a new book after four years. Kingsolver's last work of fiction was nine years ago.
To help readers get a handle on the season, Copperfield's Books is putting together a special free event for book-lovers called the *Hot Book Preview Night *on Thursday, September 24, 7pm–9 pm at its Petaluma Store, 140 Kentucky Street . Designed for book-lovers wondering what to read next, the event will host sales representatives from five major publishing houses who will describe their new books of the season. That night, Copperfield's will also introduce a new program for “insatiable readers” called the Rabid Readers Program featuring these fall releases. Copperfield's Books also offers reviews of the season's new titles on its website.
