Copperfield’s Books is much more than a place to purchase a new book or magazine. It’s where national authors meet their readers in an intimate setting to discuss literature and ideas. It’s where passionate thinkers are hired as booksellers. It's where book lovers enjoy spending their time.
Eight Copperfield’s stores are flourishing locally in Sonoma and Napa counties thanks to book lovers who appreciate the difference local independent booksellers offer. The stores are vibrant gathering places that offer cozy surroundings for finding stimulating books or informally meeting neighbors to talk about a bestseller. The Copperfield's website embodies that local independent bookstore feeling as well along with our commitment to service online.
It began in 1981 when Barney Brown and Paul Jaffe launched Copperfield’s in a small storefront in downtown Sebastopol in 1981. The town needed a full-service bookstore and Brown and Jaffe embraced the chance to share what they loved – books – with the public. Now with stores in Healdsburg, Napa, Calistoga, Petaluma, Santa Rosa, and Sebastopol, that love of books governs us still.
Each store is stocked with a broad selection of books and periodicals as well as unusual merchandise like gifts, cards, and music. In our stores, a first-time author from the community has a chance to speak to an audience at Copperfield’s in a non-threatening environment. It’s also a place for notable authors to share wisdom, writing techniques and anecdotes with a crowd of devoted readers. Copperfield’s differentiates itself from impersonal mega-stores where customers get in, get what they want, and get out quickly. It’s okay to linger at Copperfield’s, perched on a stool in your favorite section of the store perusing books.
Copperfield's Used & Rare bookstores in Sebastopol and Petaluma provide access to more than 40,000 titles. Our buyers are committed to stocking the shelves with a full range of subjects, from art, history, science, and spirituality to all genres of fiction and poetry in the best possible condition. We also buy used books from our customers in the Sebastopol and Petaluma Used & Rare stores and in our Santa Rosa warehouse.
The virtual bookstore we have created online brings readers thousands of new and used book selections as well. But it also is a haven for book loving browsers, entertaining through author video and interviews, book reviews and staff picks, book and writing contests.
Copperfield's takes pride in playing an important support and service role in the life of the community. Customers can count on Copperfield's to provide out-of-print book searches, to offer outstanding book and cultural events, to conduct and help establish book clubs, to promote literacy through a variety of grassroots fundraising efforts, and to continue to be your local independent bookstore.
